How to Grow Saponaria ocymoides
Sowing: Directly sow seeds in late fall, pressing them into the soil surface as they need light to germinate. For spring planting, sow on the soil surface and keep it lightly moist until germination, which takes 14-30 days. You can also start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before spring planting. Keep seedlings lightly moist and transplant them once they have several leaves.
Growing: Water seedlings regularly until established. This plant grows quickly and needs little care. Mature plants tolerate heat, drought, and thrive in sandy or rocky soils. Trim the plant periodically to encourage bushier growth. It attracts bees and butterflies and will self-seed unless cut back after flowering. Ideal as ground cover, edging, or in containers.
Harvesting: These flowers do not last well as cut flowers and are best enjoyed outdoors.
Seed Saving: After the flowers fade, small pods will form and release seeds. Shake the open pods over a container to collect seeds. Store seeds in a cool, dry place to prevent loss.
